Basic Welding Workshops

Dan our resident crazy scientist will show you the ins and outs of welding. The workshop will be run over four weeks, starting on Saturday, 4 May and the last session on 25 May. It will cover all of the basics you need to know about how to use the machinery safely, learning technique and arc control. Places are limited so get in first. You will need to provide your own gloves and if you have any heavy gauge steel to practise on, bring that too. Make sure you are dressed correctly for the workshop; you will need a cotton or wool long sleeve shirt, heavy duty trousers (denim is fine) and leather shoes/boots.

 Workshops start at 1pm and will take place at the East Gippsland MakerSpace, 25 Morgan Street, Bairnsdale.

East Gippsland Amateur Radio Club / MakerSpace basic radio and electronics course

The Radio Club / MakerSpace basic radio and electronics course is now accepting attendees. It will primarily be aimed at but certainly not limited to those who wish to try for a Foundation level Amateur Radio License and those who hope to upgrade to or as a first attempt try for a Standard Level Amateur Radio License.

The course will run over five Sundays beginning at 1.30pm as below in the Lounge at the Space and costs will be $5 per day for EGARC or MakerSpace members or pensioners who are not members of either group or $10 per day for all others not members of either group. Costs will include refreshments, notes on each day’s proceedings and any prac items consumed, and sessions will run around 2 ½ hours or so with breaks.

If at the conclusion people are interested an examination day can be organized (this will be subject to Wireless Institute of Australia and Australian Communications and Media Authority administration and statutory costs).

Dates and Subject Outline:

Day 1 Sunday April 14

Technical Basics; DC voltage and current, AC theory, Resistors , resistance and power, Capacitance and capacitors

Day 2 Sunday April 21
Inductors, transformers,
Resistance/reactance/impedance
Resonant circuits

Day 3 Sunday May 12
Solid state devices, diodes and transistors
“Walk through” of a simple circuit involving all above components.

Day 4 Sunday May 19
Transmitters and Receivers
Oscillators, mixers, modulation types

Day 5 Sunday June 9
Radio wave propagation
Antenna theory, feed lines and SWR
Electromagnetic compatibility and EMI reduction.
Regulations
Hands on transceiver use.

There is a lot to cover but it will be kept at the appropriate level , and will be interactive with a fair bit of Audio Visual material and “hands on”.  Please let us know as soon as possible if you wish to attend or have any queries or suggestions.
